FALLS RD DEER FENCE COMPLETED

With deer numbers on the increase in the Dandenong Ranges and increasing impact on the garden’s horticultural collections, a 1.6km deer exclusion fence was funded as part of the State Government’s ‘Chelsea Australian Garden at Olinda’ project. This new exclusion fence has just been completed, with the contractor moving directly into June 2021 storm repairs along the garden’s existing fence line. With all of these
repairs now complete Parks Victoria is actively monitoring whether there are any deer left within the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden.

This deer fence is essential to keep deer damage at bay, particularly given all the new rhododendron plantings that the society have been doing in the last few years. The only other threats to the success of the plantings are Lyrebirds, wombat, wallaby and rabbits...every place has its local animals to deal with!
